On this week’s episode of the Insider podcast, Deputy Director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project Lee Gelernt joins Joyce Vance, while Preet is out, to discuss the latest developments in J.G.G. v. Trump, a case challenging President Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members.

Gelernt, the lead attorney in the case, recently argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in support of a federal judge’s authority to investigate whether Trump administration officials deliberately defied his order blocking the deportations. Gelernt also explains the history of the Alien Enemies Act and the legal merits of President Trump’s invocation of the statute to carry out deportations. Plus, he previews the immigration cases before the Supreme Court this term, including disputes over asylum, immigrant detention, and the limits of immigration enforcement.
