Dear Reader,
There is a scene in the movie “What About Bob,” in which Bill Murray’s character tells a story about a psychiatrist showing a series of sketches to a patient. As the patient is shown pictures of a house, a tree, a cat, etc., and is asked what he sees, he answers, “sex” for every image. When the doctor points out the patient’s apparent obsession with sex, the patient replies, “What are you talking about, you’re the one drawing all the dirty pictures!”
I was reminded of that scene this week when I started hearing criticism about President Joe Biden’s commitment to nominate an African-American woman to the U.S. Supreme Court. Almost immediately, his pledge was met with the predictable outcry that this appointment would amount to racial discrimination.
