Hours before Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a “special military operation” in Ukraine, Preet interviewed Kimberly Marten, a Russia expert and political science professor at Barnard College and Columbia University. They discussed Putin’s possible motives for invading Ukraine, the strategy behind U.S sanctions, and where we go from here. Listen here.
Russian ground incursions began into Ukraine around 5 a.m. EST, and U.S. officials estimate Russians have deployed 75 fixed-wing bombers and more than 100 missiles. Meanwhile, NATO held an emergency session after several nations that border Russia invoked Article 4 of the alliance's founding treaty, which allows member states to hold consultations when they feel their territorial integrity is under threat. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called the invasion a "brutal act of war,” adding, "peace on our continent has been shattered." President Biden is expected to deliver remarks at 12:30 p.m. EST.
On Thursday, March 31st, we’re bringing Stay Tuned with Preet to New York’s Town Hall (123 W 43rd Street) — our first live, in-person show since the start of the pandemic.
