Dear Reader,

Donald Trump is not a serious person. I know that you already know that, but in a world that is still far too prone to take him seriously, it bears repeating. The man must not be taken seriously, endowed with any public stature, even though the Republican Party refuses to quit him.

The mug shot in Georgia. The trial date in Washington, D.C. The fact that he faces prosecution on significant, meritorious charges must be apparent to the former president at this point. But he still shows no signs of taking things seriously. Instead, he proclaimed himself the Bedminster summer golf champion on Truth Social, where he posted: “I am pleased to report, for those that care, that I just won the Senior Club Championship (must be over 50 years old!) at Bedminster (Trump National Golf Club), shooting a round of 67. Now, some people will think that sounds low, but there is no hanky/lanky. Many people watch, plus I am surrounded by Secret Service Agents. Not much you can do even if you wanted to, and I don’t. For some reason, I am just a good golfer/athlete – I have won many Club Championships, and it is always a great honor!”

It’s a stunner of a statement in so many ways. For one thing, what is hanky/lanky? And is he insinuating that a person with Secret Service protection can’t do anything wrong? Will that be the next specious defense he floats? Does he expect us to believe he has no desire to cheat at golf…or other things? It’s as laughable as Trump’s return to Twitter, where he posted his Georgia mugshot with the slogan, “Never surrender,” when surrendering at the Rice Street Jail in Fulton County was precisely what he’d just done.
